Programme

Here’s the overview of the programme – three presentations on Thursday and Friday morning, followed by breakout sessions in the afternoon; and also the shorter “Best Kept Secrets” (7 minute presentation + 7 minute discussion)

Wednesday November 5th

  • Arrival day – travel (good connections from Bristol, Cardiff, LHR airports) to Cardiff Central Station where we will collect and transfer you to the Parc Thistle Hotel (Cardiff City Centre, 6-7 minutes walk from the Atrium). Travel and venue information here, and full registration & information pack on arrival.
  • Afternoon Masterclass by Kim Longinotto for students (2-5pm in the ATRiuM)
  • Evening drinks reception / dinner in Parc Hotel

 

Thursday November 6th (Atrium, USW)

  • Mandy Rose (Digital Cultures Research Centre): Brave New Doc World. The market is changing, the places where documentary is seen are changing, the way documentaries are made is changing. Which profession are we teaching? For which markets and jobs? How can we prepare our students for the next ten years?
  • Paul Pauwels (European Documentary Network): Documentary Production in crisis? Developments in Public Service Broadcasting & Creative Europe – reasons for despair or optimism?
  • Mark Atkin (Crossover Labs): New forms of documentary.Examining the user journey: how to teach transmedia?
  • Afternoon breakout sessions in small groups with speakers
  • Best Kept Secrets #1: short presentations (7 minutes each, visual “pecha kucha” style is ideal) followed by Q&A, of best documentary exercises.
  • Evening dinner / drinks

Friday November 6th (Atrium, USW)

  • Charlie Phillips (Guardian Films): New methods of finance & distribution. Can we – should we – teach crowd-sourcing & crowd-funding, or leave these to the students?
  • Alexandra Anderson (Ryerson University, Canada): Teaching Cross Media – strategies to encourage innovation.
  • Speaker 2: Niels Pagh Andersen (Editor of The Act of Killing / Norwegian Film School): My Way – film school or no film school?
  • Afternoon breakout sessions in small groups with speakers
  • Best Kept Secrets #2: short presentations (7 minutes each, visual “pecha kucha” style is ideal) followed by Q&A, of best documentary exercises.
